Week 3 : the West Coast, Ligurian, Etruscan... from Cinque Terre to Porto Ercole.

We visit VIAREGGIO, drive north along the coast passing  FORTE DEI MARMI, both well known amongst European tourists.
We drive up the mountains to see the marble quaries of the world famous CARRARA, in use for more than 2000 years.
We drive to LA SPEZIA, an important military port and city developed around 1860 when the military arsenal was built. There we decide to visit the region that many rave about, the famous CINQUE TERRE, a group of 5 villages nestled between mountain and sea. We take the boat to go the the furthest of the 5 villages and walk back  the 3200 m path to the neighbor village along a rugged and beautiful coastline. Well, this was an experience, walking under an incredible heat, we felt like we were melting.

The next day  we drive southwards again and spend another a night in Lucca which is, untill now,  our favorite place.

We go high in the hills to visit some "piu belli borghi d'Italia" like BARGA.

South of Pisa starts the Costa degli Etruschi, the Etruscan Coast, starting with a many miles long very nice pine tree forest.

In POPULONIA we visit Etrusque tombs which were surmounted by a tumulus as we can admire since one was completely restaured. There was a bigEtruscan  town  on the hill and their necropolis in the valley.  We read the Etruscans caled themselves Tusci ...... like in "TUSCANY" !!!

Places we visit are called FOLLONICA, CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA
PORTO SANTO STEFANO and its neighbor  PORTO ERCOLE. All the villages have their old medieval castle on top, the Rocca.

The weather is utmostly hot, the African scirocco is bringing a serious heatwave all over Italy, South of France and other regions; we easily experience 35 to 38 C (101 F), and waaaaaay more in the car after an hour in a shadeless parking.

Here we leave the coast to go inland and northwards to SIENNA, but that is for next article.

=============================

Viareggio, typical house in Liberty Style.

 Italia ?? California ?
this looks like Hermosa or Manhattan Beach.

La voiture qui se prenait pour une mobylette en se garant sur un parking réservé aux scooters .......
This car really thinks she's as small as a scooter.

Le grand parc très agréable de Viareggio.

CARRARA, montagnes de marbre.
Carrières exploitées depuis plus de 2000 ans.

On descendait les blocs de marbre à bras d'hommes.

Magnifiques bougainvilliers.

On peint à la main ....

La Spezzia : première fois que nous voyons une rue toute en escaliers.

CINQUE TERRE
Le sentier part du village làbas tout au fond dans la baie et suit la falaise.

ITALIA week 2 : di Venezia a Viareggio, coast to coast.

After spending several days in Venezia, we rent a car to start our Italan road trip.

We had reserved an economy car "Fiat Panda or similar". When we picked up the car, we did not get the Panda but the "or similar" one which happened to have a smaller trunk. While trying to stuff our 2 bags, pushing and puffing,  we noticed the Fiat 500 next to us. We asked if we could try the trunk which seemed obviously slightly bigger - allthough the car itself was smaller -  which was exactly what we needed so.......... OFF WE GO IN FIAT 500 through Italy.

We visit PADOVA, nice city with a lot of covered walkways, unfortunately I forgot to take a picture
Then MARANELLO and its Ferrari museum.  Afterwards, in Modena the Mseo Panini, a Maserati collection belonging to an Italian who also  has an organic cheese farm where they make the famous Parmeggiano Reggiano, the specialty of this region (the other specialty is the vinager of Modena , the city next door). So , you guess who was visiting what part of this property.
Afterwards FIRENZE where we stayed for 2 nights in a place that came straigh out of a French movie made in the Povence except we are in Tuscany. Right now, early July 215,  Italy is experiencing a heatwave caused by a wind coming from Africa.   We  got 42 C !!
Then LUCCA, an adorable little city surrounded by its big walls, birth place of Puccini. As you can see on the pictures, there is a high tower on which summit trees have been planted since the Middle Ages
PISA is next with it famous tower, before touching the Thyrrenean Sea at Viareggio.
