It was called the Bay of Natal, then Port Natal when a British settlement was established in 1824 (after Grahamstown). The first Boer arrived In 1837, led by Piet Retief. The free Natalia Republic was created in 1839 but was short-lived as it was annexed by Britain in 1943 and added to the "Cape Colony". Many Boer moved again, went north and created there the Oranje Vrij Staat and Transvaal Republics, while others decided to stay.
The city was then called Durban for the then governor, Mr d'Urban (definitely a Huguenot descendant)
Durban has the largest Indian population outside of India who were "imported" for the labor in the sugar cane fields. It's also the first city where we see white homeless.

.
At one point I counted 20 ships waiting to get into the port.
