Stellenbosch-la-jolie

We spend several days in Stellenbosch. This town is VERY quaint and it is a pleasure to walk.It was founded in 1679, 17 years after Cape Town and thus the second oldest town in the country. Simon Van der Stel, the then governor, gave his name to this beautiful place. He planted many oak trees, of which several are still alive.  We are in the centre of the world known wine region of which we will write in our next article.
Stellenbosch university is the only one of South Africa to teach a big part of its classes in afrikaans language.
Our guest house is in a nice suburb, just 1 1km SE of town. We can walk to the SuperSpar.
We have the impression more people speak afrikaans here then in Cape Town, and I understand them better too, no funny accent like on the soaps on tv.

There is a long electricity  outage a full afternoon. Our host tells us that many South Africans are very frustrated with the way the government functions , or let's say does not function; the country has so many possibilities but is not at all taken care of by the people in charge, corrupt or incapable (or both).

 Yes,  we ARE in Africa.
