Next to all those beautiful beaches, modern villas and design gardens, there is another world of which we did not see much yet. There are areas with a lot of poverty which I would compare to the Brasilian favelas. Out of the several townships around Cape Town, 4 can be visited, guided by someone who grew up in the particular place you visit. I would have liked to discover one but eventually it did not work out. Which is why I only have pictures taken from the car. I hope that by the end of this South African trip we will have the opportunity to know more about this matter.
A Township is, " in South Africa, a suburb or city of predominantly black occupation, formerly officially designated for black occupation by apartheid legislation ".
:".....A shanty town or squatter area is a settlement of plywood, corrugated metal, sheets of plastic, and cardboard boxes. They are usually found on the periphery of cities, public parks, or near railroad tracks, rivers, lagoons or city trash dump sites. ....."
So, a township is not automatically a shanty town; but could become one.
Sorry but the photos are not of excellent quality.
